A Century of Craftsmanship: The Journey of R.O. Arnold Ltd

In the hushed streets of Doncaster, a builders’ merchant and coal supplier for the local community came to life in July 1923. Richard Oswald Arnold, a local visionary, founded R.O. Arnold Ltd on Sterling Street, Hyde Park. With skilled hands and a heart brimming with ambition, he embarked on a journey that would leave an indelible mark on the community.

After relocating to Wheatley Hall Road, where the headquarters of Arnolds still proudly stands today, we expanded our horizons. From a builders’ merchant, we ventured into the world of craftsmanship, setting up a workshop that would go on to manufacture tiled fireplaces. As the decades passed, we continued to evolve. Our workshop became a hub of creativity, where stone fireplaces, intricately designed in-house, took centre stage. Crafted from micromarble and limestone, these masterpieces adorned homes across the region, becoming symbols of elegance and comfort.

In the 1950s, a new chapter unfolded as we introduced Firecraft, our sister company, with a showroom on Thorne Road. It wasn’t just a place for fireplace parts; it also featured surplus fires from R.O. Arnold Ltd. This expansion was a turning point, and they continued to grow, relocating to Silver Street, then on to Netherhall Road before eventually finding it’s home with Arnolds at Wheatley Hall Road, eventually becoming the Fireplace Studio you know today.
Firecraft soon evolved into a destination not only for fireplaces but also bathrooms and kitchens. It was during this transformation that we forged a pivotal relationship with Villeroy & Boch (V&B). In the early 1990s, V&B was seeking distributors to deliver their exquisite bathroom products to discerning bathroom showrooms, and Arnolds was a perfect match. This partnership with V&B opened doors for us in the world of bathroom distribution.

At that time, Arnolds were already distributing BeModern fireplaces on our own vans, and this experience seamlessly extended to distributing V&B products, becoming an essential part of our journey. As the years rolled on, our commitment to excellence led us to add more renowned brands to our portfolio. Keuco, Silestone, Vogue, Dekton, Viega, HSK, and, most recently, Imperial Bathrooms became integral parts of our offering, shaping the landscape of bathroom and kitchen design and distribution in the UK.

Additionally, Our sister company Utopia Projects, since their incorporation in 2005, has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of contract bathroom specifications across the whole of the UK. Working closely with architects, interior designers, hoteliers and developers, they deliver bespoke solutions to hotels, spas, residential properties and commercial developments nationwide. And with an ever widening portfolio of high end clients such as the The Royal Lancaster Hotel, The Dorchester Group, Hilton Hotels & Resorts and Malmaison amongst many others, Utopia Projects continue to serve the whole commercial bathroom sector with industry leading service and expertise.

This year, having recognized the need to support customers with their online presence, and thus assisting with the wider promotion of Arnold’s product portfolio; our newest venture ‘Showroom Network was born’. A dedicated digital marketing company specialising in building websites for independent retailers within the KBB (Kitchen, Bedroom, and Bathroom) market. With an innovative approach aiming to make a significant impact in the digital realm, providing support to Arnolds customers and beyond.

As we celebrate our centenary, we look back on a century filled with dedication, craftsmanship, and adaptability, with our sister companies standing as pillars of our growth. We’ve stood the test of time, our headquarters on Wheatley Hall Road remaining a beacon of creativity and excellence. It’s a testament to our enduring commitment to quality and innovation. We remain committed to pushing boundaries, embracing innovation, and making a positive impact on the world. Together, we will continue to write the next chapter of our success story.
